About Construction’s Impact in America

Construction has been and continues to be a significant contributor to economic development and prosperity in America. From public projects like hospitals, schools, roads and bridges to recreational venues like sports arenas and shopping malls, the commercial and industrial construction industry is the backbone of America’s infrastructure. Construction also plays an important role in the progress of our nation by improving and building the places where we live, work and play.

In 2017, construction spending in the United States was valued at $1.23 trillion, and nearly one in every 20 non-farming workers in the United States were employed in the industry—a total of 7.8 million Americans. And, as the federal government considers an infrastructure package, it’s important to remember that every $1 billion in extra construction spending generates an average of at least 6,300 construction jobs. At the state and local level alone, nearly $270 billion worth of construction projects were put in place in 2017.

As the economy continues to recover and expand, construction remains a pillar of a strong U.S. economy.
